This creation of this blog post has been quite a journey. Every week I learned something new about food in regards to culture. Food is the basis for the creation of the society we live in today. Food is power and life- without it, we would not be here today. Before taking this Global Food Studies course, I never thought about the origins of food. I am not sure if it was because I didn’t care or because I never thought about the idea. Learning about food culture has transformed the way I view food and cuisine. I now know that each individual food source has had a major impact on the way societies have grown and expanded. Monumental periods in history have also been shaped by food, such as the Agricultural Revolution, the beginnings of slavery, and the creation of social classes. A plethora can cause population growth, while a family can just as equally cause a decline in the population and productivity of a nation.
Journaling my food habits and the foods I consume daily has made me more aware of what I am putting into my mouth. It has allowed me to become more critical of the meals I am eating and think about where they may have originated. Did they come from a local garden? Did they travel across the world before they reached my fork? One thing I know for sure is that I may never eat corn on the cob again. After watching Seed, a documentary about our planet’s seed sources and GMO corporations, I have developed an awareness of GMO products and the damage they can do to our bodies and society. While I will continue to eat healthy and choose health-conscious foods, I will put more time in effort into thinking about where my food came from and its impact on our nation and other nations around the world. I will always be grateful for taking this course and cannot wait to spread the knowledge I have obtained with my friends and family! Enjoy some bonus images of meals and food during my travels over the past several weeks.
