I mentioned in a previous blog post that my dad is well-known for his chocolate chip cookies, so I thought I would dedicate a full post to talk about them. He began baking his cookies in 1994 when he and my mom were in their mid-20s. It was almost an accident that he discovered he was amazing at baking chocolate chip cookies. Presently, he sells them at a local convenience store in my home town. Family and friends from all over the world ask us when they can have some again. They are loved by everyone!

I have several strong food memories surrounding my dad’s cookies. When I was a young girl I would stand on a step-stool and help my dad make the cookie dough. We would eat tiny bites of the dough as it was mixing. I would stand in the kitchen and watch the timer as it would count down the minutes until the cookies were done. At the time, he only made chocolate chip. Now, we have made a variety of flavors including M&M, Snickers, white chocolate macadamia, walnut, peanut butter, Oreo, and even mint chocolate chip! Although he has tried to teach me the recipe thousands of times, I can never make them the same way he does. What is interesting about his cookies is the fact that other people have attempted to bake them, but none taste the same. The combination of ingredients, love, time, and tradition all work together to create the perfect Awesome FN Cookie.

The chocolate chip cookie was invented in Massachusetts, making it a very local cuisine. It is interesting to be able to analyze my own personal food preferences and see them through a cultural lens, which this course has enabled me to do. I have attached the Instagram handle of my dad’s cookies if anyone is interested in them!
