This is the first post on my new blog. The reason I began this blog page was to share my experience with food and culture specific to my life. I am extremely passionate about all types of food, and just food in general! After enrolling in a food culture studies class, I have developed an interest in learning about why food is the way that it is in different areas of the world. I hope my blog can spark a conversation amongst all of us to be more aware of the food we are putting into our bodies every day, and hopefully thinking about the culture behind it as well. Let’s begin with my own personal food experiences.
Growing up, I would typically have three main meals and two snacks. This was partly due to the way I was raised and partly due to my school system. I was taught that a healthy and balanced diet included breakfast, lunch, and dinner, along with one or two snacks. As I grew older, my schedule of eating remained the same. I grew a passion for nutrition after enrolling in a nutrition course when I attended college. I loved the idea of learning about the food we eat and what is consists of. This passion led me to prepare for my first bodybuilding competition, which consisted of a very rigorous diet and exercise program. I had the pleasure of training under a brilliant coach, who taught me more about food and nutrition that I had ever imagined.
My newfound interest in the fitness industry had influenced the way in which I eat. The main factors that determine what I eat are cost, time, and health related. I always tend to eat healthy and try to make sure I am eating a full- balanced diet with mainly whole foods. Although I try to eat healthy, it can be costly. As a college student, I have to be cost efficient choices when I shop for food. Time also is a factor, as I sometimes have to squeeze in meals during class time, studying, or while I am at work.
